Members of the Miramichi Supports Ukraine Committee hosted a community vigil Feb. 24 at Queen Elizabeth Park to mark the two-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The event was held to coincide with the exact anniversary of the start of the invasion, committee chair Christopher Reid said.

Reid said there were more than 50 people in attendance, including both Ukrainian newcomers and locals.

“It was a very moving event that saw some tears as well as smiles,” he said. “People stayed for a long time after, even in the bitter cold, to connect with each other and share in their experiences.”

The vigil began with a minute of silence, followed by the Ukrainian anthem and some conversations.
